Seeing the family

Posted May 23rd, 2008 at 11:03 am by Anthony

10 months, 20 days, 4 hours, 14 minutes old

Well, we have indeed booked a trip back to Iowa for July. We’re arriving early on June 30th and departing early on July 5. Our schedule when we’re back is predictably filling up fast, but it sounds like we’ll be able to make it to my Great Uhcle Dan’s memorial service later in the week. It should be a good opportunity to not only celebrate the man, but also for Ali to meet her huge extended family on my mom’s side.

So, tips for traveling with a 1 year old, on the red-eye, no less? I stayed up waaaaay too late last night reading everything I could online, and it sounds like pretty much all common sense measures apply. If you have any particular tips or tricks, however, leave a comment and spread the wealth. We’re traveling on Northwest (my airline of choice) if that matters.

And on another note, man its expensive to travel these days. We do so much complaining about the cost of gas and it seems like the most expensive option until you get online and start pricing plane tickets!

How long is that flight? When we took Shayla, she was about one-and-a-half, and the flight was also only two and a half hours, so I’m not sure that it will be the same experience for you guys…at least I hope not. One thing that we wished was that we’d brought her carseat for her to sit in rather than holding her, since there were lots of empty seats. And bring lots of books, since she loves them so much! I hope it goes smoothly for you guys.

Its about 3 and a half hours, then a layover, then another hour. I’m leaning towards taking the car seat (even though we didn’t buy a 50% off seat for her) in case there are empty seats.

    Hi Tony,
I’m so excited that you and Ashley and Ali will be in iowa when I’ll be there this summer. I used to travel with you boys all the time and hope Ali is as good a traveler as you were.
I always travelled with crackers and snacks, which can be critical for those times that they keep you in the airplane on the runway. Put away a few of her favorite small toys for a few days before you go and bring them out if she fusses on the airplane.
I would give you a bottle or nurse you at takeoff and landing so that the sucking would let your ears equilibrate. Let her play in the airport while you’re waiting so that she stays awake and tires herself out. On the best flights, you had a bottle taking off, then fell sound asleep for the entire flight.
Most of all, keep your sense of humor. Most of the people on the airplane understand an inconsolable baby, and if they don’t, who cares? Remember it will be over eventually and you will never have to see those people again!
    Love,
    Mom
